Schuyler board votes to buy CKLA pilot materials for K–5 after review of revisions and support plans

The Schuyler Community Schools board voted to purchase CKLA (Amplify) pilot materials for kindergarten through grade five, approving the purchase by unanimous roll call.

Administrators presented CKLA as the recommended English‑language‑arts pilot for K–5, citing cross‑curricular texts, multilingual supports and an integrated language‑studio intervention intended to support English learners while building academic vocabulary. The presenter said the district consulted neighboring districts already using CKLA, arranged classroom visits for staff, and plans pre‑pilot professional development and ESU support to increase fidelity of implementation.

Board members asked about previously reported controversial passages in earlier CKLA editions. Administrators responded that Amplify’s third edition incorporated changes in response to district and statewide feedback, including removal of certain religion‑focused passages and other edits flagged during earlier adoption cycles, and they offered to circulate a document summarizing what was changed.

To monitor the pilot’s effectiveness, administration said it will compare pilot classrooms with classrooms continuing to use Wonders using MAP and early‑literacy assessments at middle and end‑of‑year checkpoints, and review classroom‑level data and teacher feedback. Administrators emphasized that full adoption would depend on pilot results, with options to pause or adjust if implementation or outcomes fall short.

The motion to purchase pilot materials was moved and seconded and carried on a roll‑call vote; each recorded vote on the motion was “yes.” The board directed staff to proceed with the pilot implementation and training timeline described during the presentation.
