Norton Elementary emptied and assets repurposed as school is turned over for demolition

Staff described how teacher contents and classroom furniture were staged for reuse at other district schools (some items went to Barnum, Highland and Cheshire High School), how larger fixtures such as a library circulation desk were donated to the Cheshire Public Library, and how community pickup dates and nonprofit donations (including St. Bridget's and Waterbury Catholic Academy) allowed residents and groups to claim reusable items.
Facilities staff salvaged maintenance equipment and fixtures — including dehumidifiers, fans, accessible hardware, fire extinguishers, thermostats and LED light fixtures — for redeployment across the district. Smartboards and other equipment were removed and repurposed or recycled as appropriate.
Staff said the moving and salvage work required significant coordination; the cleared building was handed over to the demolition contractor after the June 26 deadline. Board members and staff thanked movers, facility staff and volunteers involved in the salvage effort and observed that the district had derived value from roughly 70 years of use at Norton.
What happens next: demolition proceeds under the contractor; staff will continue to redistribute salvageable materials and incorporate lessons learned into future school closure logistics.
