Laurium council to poll residents on possible cityhood, schedules Dec. 3 special meeting

Laurium Village Council discussed next steps in exploring a change from village to city status and set a special meeting for Dec. 3 to continue the conversation.
Manager Ian Lewis said he circulated pros and cons from the village attorney about pursuing cityhood and recommended gauging resident interest. "The first step will be to put out a Facebook poll to gauge interest of Laurium residents," Lewis said. The council also discussed inviting Florida Location residents to consider annexation with a future city and holding a public meeting to explain what changes cityhood would bring.
Council asked that Mr. Letzman begin drafting a contract so the village could have a cityhood draft by Jan. 1. The special meeting, scheduled for Dec. 3 at 6:00 p.m., will include review of cityhood wording, appointment of a two-year council position, and review of the recreation plan.
No formal vote to pursue cityhood was taken; the council agreed to public outreach and legal preparation steps before any ballot or ordinance action.
