The Village of Laurium council on Oct. 1 reviewed the results of spring inspections and a June 26 hearing on four properties and approved hearing officer orders for two of them, setting timelines for work to begin and be completed.
Hearing Officer Steve Wright of UP Engineers & Architects and Houghton County Building Inspector Todd LaRoux inspected four properties in spring 2024 and held a hearing on June 26, 2024. The June hearing produced orders including condemnation and demolition for 327 Lake Linden Ave and for 113-115 Kearsarge St; 217 Tamarack St was reported sold and the new owners plan to demolish the house and build a garage next summer; 118 Willow Ave was described as having broken windows, roof damage and other unsecured openings but being repairable.
Meeting notes say the owner of 327 Lake Linden Ave obtained a Houghton County demolition permit and has contracted to perform the demolition; the village intends to send a follow-up letter to verify progress. For 217 Tamarack St, part of the adjacent lot was sold to a neighbor and the filled basement/foundation is being used as a driveway.
Councilmember Galbraith moved and Councilmember Ninko seconded a motion to approve the hearing officer’s orders on 113-115 Kearsarge St and 118 Willow Ave, including a requirement that property owners demonstrate initiation of the ordered work within six months and complete it within 12 months. The motion carried 6-0.
The transcript does not record monetary penalties, permit numbers, or dates beyond the hearing date and the compliance timelines; the village clerk recorded the minutes and approved them Oct. 15, 2024.
