Laurium OKs equipment sales; police hiring and training updates given

Laurium Village Council heard updates on public safety staffing and equipment and approved the sale of a sweeper during its Nov. 19 meeting.
Manager Ian Lewis told the council that "Nick Olson is in the final stages of background checks and paperwork to become a full time officer." Olson is expected to work part time in December and begin full time Jan. 1, 2025. Lewis also reported that the department will participate in Taser 10 training sponsored by Houghton at no cost to the Laurium department and that a new patrol car will be fully equipped in December.
On fire equipment, the council reported the new fire truck chassis decision to accept the available 2024 chassis so build-out would be faster; the truck is expected to arrive in less than a year. Discussion of fleet management noted the village aims to maintain a $25,000 maintenance fund but balances are below that target. Councilmember Jeff Erickson located a 2003 tandem dump truck (no engine/transmission) offered for about $4,500 as a possible future acquisition and proposed selling the old Zamboni and the sweeper.
Erickson moved to sell the sweeper; Wesley Pietila seconded and the call vote carried unanimously. The council discussed selling other surplus equipment by closed bid to raise maintenance funds.
