Council adopts 5‑year parks plan, approves $75 individual season pass for Gipp ice

The Laurium Village Council approved a draft 5‑year Parks and Recreation Plan with adjustments and adopted an individual season pass for the Gipp ice program at $75 during its Nov. 19 meeting.
Jeff Erickson, who leads recreation reporting, said: "The ice is in process at the Gipp. They are lining up Zamboni drivers, lines are being painted." Council recorded that Patrick’s Plumbing quoted under $1,000 to complete identified plumbing repairs before opening. Superior Sand and Gravel donated three tons of infield mix for use on the Men’s softball field and at Gipp 1.
Erickson moved to adopt an individual season pass priced at $75 (based on $3 per skate over the season); the motion was seconded by Krista Carlson and carried unanimously. Council discussed but deferred offering family passes until next season. Students are designing a recreation logo; the preferred design will be used as the plan cover.
Manager Ian Lewis reported grant outreach for Phase II of the Gipp project: the Incredible Bank Foundation has expressed interest in Phase II, Dick’s Sporting Goods Foundation has a pending decision, and the Great Lakes Sports Commission has a possible $25,000 grant for low-income communities due in December. Lewis noted a DNR grant application deadline of Feb. 5, 2025, for eligible projects.
The plan approval allows staff to pursue the grant opportunities and move forward with Phase II design and fundraising.
