Cloud County approves multiple hires and aging-board appointments; sheriff wage proposal discussed with no action
Summary
The board approved hiring William Pennington as Road Maintenance (effective July 6) and Camerson Cheshek as Corrections Officer I (effective June 22); it also appointed Kathryn Walton and Sonya Garwood to the Commission on Aging (terms to June 30, 2029) and accepted the retirement notice of Maintenance Manager Jeff Thoman effective Sept. 30, 2026. A proposed $2/hour wage increase for sheriff’s department employees was discussed but not acted on.
The Cloud County Board of Commissioners approved several personnel actions on June 22. Commissioners voted unanimously to hire William Pennington as Road Maintenance (F1), effective July 6, 2026, and to hire Camerson Cheshek as Corrections Officer I (E1), effective June 22, 2026.
The board also appointed Kathryn Walton and Sonya Garwood to the Cloud County Commission on Aging, replacing Althea Sicard and Gary Sorell, for terms ending June 30, 2029. In addition, the board accepted the resignation due to retirement from Maintenance Manager Jeff Thoman, effective Sept. 30, 2026.
Sheriff Ken Davis and Deputy Ashley Tobald presented a proposal that would raise base wages by $2.00 per hour for department employees (excluding the sheriff), eliminate one unfilled deputy position, and restructure the jail chain of command based on a review of area department wages. The minutes record discussion of the proposal but show no formal action or vote.
The board also approved a five-minute executive session under the personnel exception to discuss non-elected personnel, with the session to resume at 9:59 a.m.; the session included Rod Michaud and County Clerk Shella Thoman.
