"43 cadets signed into the log Sunday evening on June 1st. Now we have 27 standing here today," Birfield said, describing attrition over the four-month course and the sacrifices made by trainees and their families. She singled out her wife, Emily, for support while the family moved to another state during training.
Birfield said the academy instilled "integrity, accountability, professionalism, partnership, service, and innovation," and said those values will guide the new troopers as they begin service in Tennessee communities. She described daily physical training, firearms practice, defensive tactics, classroom instruction and a focus on discipline.
Following the speech, Commissioner Jeff Long and Colonel Matt Perry performed the pinning and presentation of certificates for the graduates. A roster of graduates and their home counties was read aloud during the ceremony.
Class 925 then stood to take the oath of office. The class repeated a pledge to "support the Constitution of Tennessee and the Constitution of the United States" and to "well and faithfully perform the duties imposed" as members of the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
The ceremony concluded with a benediction that thanked family members for their support and asked protection for the new troopers as they begin their careers. The retiring of the colors and closing remarks ended the program.
The graduation highlights the completion of academy training for 27 troopers who will begin assignments across Tennessee; no formal votes or policy actions were taken at the event.
