Open Space Committee eyes MassTrails grant, coordinates Marshview trail request with Greenbelt

The Open Space Committee on May 27 discussed pursuing state trail funding and coordinating a Marshview Trail change with a landholder that holds a conservation restriction.
Mary Glennon, an Open Space Committee member, outlined MassTrails grant parameters and recommended applying for up to $60,000 with the required 20% match, which can include in-kind contributions. She said applications open Nov. 1 and are due Feb. 1, and that awarded funds may be expended across two field seasons. Mary recommended NE Trailworks as a likely implementation partner and said she will confirm whether an approved Open Space and Recreation Plan is required (her check indicated it is not).
Sue Simmons, an Open Space Committee member, reported that Greenbelt holds a conservation restriction affecting portions of the Marshview Trail corridor and advised that the committee send a written request to Greenbelt seeking approval for the proposed trail changes. Because the land is town-owned, Sue said the committee should notify Jay Smith, the town Conservation Agent, to determine any requirements if wetlands will not be disturbed and no structures are planned.
Sean Wright, an Open Space Committee member, said he will ask Jamaco whether the company will designate a 'McLaren Trail Restoration' donation in the coming year to support the work. Mary said she will try to contact the property owner near the 'BeepBeep' bridge to discuss creating access there.
The committee also noted a volunteer-led trail marking and cleanup event organized by the Town Improvement Society on May 31 and discussed outreach that could supplement grant-funded work.
The committee did not take a formal vote to authorize a specific grant application at this meeting; members assigned follow-up tasks to check partner interest, confirm property access, and prepare for the application timeline.
