Sheldon R-VIII board adopts DESE compliance plan, approves trips and hears enrollment update

The Sheldon R-VIII Board of Education on Oct. 8 adopted an updated Local Compliance Plan from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and approved travel and administrative items during its regular open session.
Mr. Lamb, acting chair for the meeting, moved to adopt the DESE Local Compliance Plan; Mrs. Blurton seconded the motion and it passed 6-0. The minutes record that the board also approved out-of-state travel for students attending the FFA National Convention and for Mr. Irwin to attend the AASA conference in Nashville; that motion likewise passed 6-0 after a motion by Mr. Lamb and a second from Mrs. Claflin.
Superintendent Mr. Irwin notified the board that the district's annual audit is scheduled for Oct. 20-21 and reminded members that the filing window for board elections runs Dec. 9—Dec. 30, 2025; he noted that the terms of Mr. Leininger, Mr. Nance and Mrs. Blurton end this year. The meeting record lists those dates and the audit schedule but does not include additional procedural changes to filing or audit scope.
Kevin Post, the district principal, presented the written principal's report: current enrollment stood at 202 students (elementary 113; high school 89) with overall attendance at about 95%. He listed Students of the Month across grade spans and announced a Community Night for Oct. 16 with family activities. Post also reported that RTI groups have formed based on iReady reading scores, that the first quarter ends Oct. 17, and that parent-teacher conferences are set for Oct. 22 and 23.
During the superintendent's report, Mr. Irwin said he is exploring options for football cooperatives, mentioned a forthcoming Highway Patrol audit and a Roth Environmental inspection, and expressed appreciation for teachers and staff. The board reached consensus to move regular board meeting start times from 7 p.m. to 6 p.m. beginning Nov. 12, 2025.
