Interim Town Manager Linda Cheatham used the council's May 20 meeting to preview a busy summer calendar, report community services and note an honor for the town.
Cheatham said Bike Fest has 31 vendors signed up and that porta-johns would be delivered tomorrow. She announced a newly hired police officer expected to start work within the week and said the town settled a case that had lingered for "13 or 14 years." She also reminded residents the food bank truck would be in town from 2:00 to 5:00 and that street painting postponed by weather would be rescheduled for May 27.
On events, Cheatham said the budget will be presented for first reading and public hearing on June 2 and highlighted the Juneteenth celebration (Mayor Pro Tem David noted the date as June 21). She outlined a summer concert series with the first weekend July 19-20 and additional weekends through November 1-2, and described the Gullah Geechee Festival set for Aug. 29-31 with vendors, a cook-off and a community dinner on Aug. 31.
Cheatham said the town was honored by the Horry County Preservation Committee for placement on the National Register of Historic Places; she said the award plaque would be hung in the town office. Mayor Pro Tem David added that new murals will begin to be painted next Tuesday on the fire station and Town Hall walls.
The manager said details and vending information are posted on the town website and invited residents to attend the events.
