The Town of Atlantic Beach on May 20 approved a change of ownership and land name for Atlantic Watersports after the prospective new owner, Shawn Zimmerman, described his business operations and safety plans.
Zimmerman, who identified himself as owner of Myrtle Beach Watersports and said he is buying the business already operating in Atlantic Beach, summarized the services he operates—jet skis, pontoon and tritoon boats, dolphin tours and a pirate-ship attraction—and told council he planned to offer jet ski rides, banana boats and chair-and-umbrella rentals at the Atlantic Beach location.
When asked about safety and lifeguard coverage, Zimmerman said he prioritized training and certifications: "Safety is our number one goal." He said he had hired a company from Charlotte for Red Cross certification and arranged for ocean rescue personnel from Myrtle Beach to provide biweekly training; he estimated needing two lifeguards most of the time and said he was meeting with them Thursday.
Councilman Edward Campbell moved approval of the change of ownership and land name; Councilwoman Carla Taylor seconded the motion and the council approved it on a roll call vote (Campbell: yay; Taylor: yay; David: yes).
The council thanked Zimmerman and expressed eagerness to work with the new operator as it moves forward.
