The Town of Atlantic Beach council on May 20 approved the first reading of Ordinance 8-2025, a measure the interim town manager said is intended to clarify criminal offenses, miscellaneous provisions and penalties including loitering and abandonment of vehicles.
Interim Town Manager Linda Cheatham told the council the ordinance responds to issues residents and council members had observed, citing loitering and "abandonment of autos." She said the town attorney and police department worked together to strengthen enforcement provisions and invited questions from council.
Councilwoman Carla Taylor said she believed residents "would appreciate this effort to make our town more secure." Mayor Pro Tem John David said the ordinance "does deal with hate crimes and civil rights in the town, as well as making sure the beach front is safe," and asked that the ordinance be posted to the town website so citizens could review it before the second reading.
The motion to approve the first reading was moved by Taylor, seconded by Councilman Edward Campbell, and approved on a roll call vote (Campbell: yay; Taylor: yay; David: yes).
The ordinance will be posted on the town website for public review and the council indicated it would consider comments prior to the second reading.
