The Florence Board of Mayor and Aldermen met Nov. 4 at City Hall and approved a package of zoning, maintenance and personnel items.
Community Development Director Joel Sims presented written findings for two public hearings: a dimensional-variance request for Lot 140, Southern Oaks Part 2, and proposed technical corrections to the city's zoning ordinances. After no public comment, the board granted the dimensional variance and accepted Sims's recommendations and written findings; the board then adopted an ordinance making the technical corrections on a recorded roll call with Aldermen John Banks and Brian Grantham absent and Aldermen Mason Herrin, Kyle Martin and Brent Sistrunk voting Aye.
The board also approved several maintenance and procurement items on the consent docket. Street Director David Myers's recommendation to award a 6" asphalt patch on Main Street to AJ Construction, Inc. for $5,000 (lowest of two bids) was approved. The board approved an additional $1,730 (invoice #25-2510) for labor and equipment to locate and cap a 4" line at Main and Church streets. Park Director Mark Hester's recommendations to award replacement of the community center concrete pad to Brandon Concrete, LLC for $4,500 and to purchase and install fence slats for the tennis courts from Nathaneal Smith for $5,542 (low bid; JM Fence Company bid $7,473) were both approved, each by unanimous votes.
On personnel and policy matters, the board voted to renew employee health insurance with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Mississippi effective December 2025. The board also directed the City Attorney to update the city sick-leave policy for the police department to mirror state policy and authorized the City Attorney to work with Mayor Trey Gunn on updating water and wastewater policies and fees.
The board approved the claims docket and the minutes of Oct. 21, 2025, and formally accepted the facts-and-findings prepared by Joel Sims related to the zoning matters.
The meeting adjourned at 6:55 p.m.
