Interim Superintendent Mr. Ulmer told the board that 24 Bamberg athletes and 13 Denmark‑Olar athletes qualified for the state meet and that coaches had requested lodging in Columbia so students would not have to travel early on the morning of May 16. "They will travel to Columbia on May 15th, which is tomorrow afternoon. They will spend the night and they will come home on May the 16th," Mr. Ulmer said.
The board heard logistical details: Travis Wilson was identified as the Bamberg track coach and Lacannis Jones as the Denmark‑Olar coach, and multiple coaches — both male and female — will chaperone. Mr. Ulmer said students would travel by district bus and that the travel would occur after school so students would not miss instruction. He told the board that parents and parent organizations would raise funds to cover trip costs; when a board member noted the financing box on the Denmark‑Olar form had not been marked, Mr. Ulmer said staff would correct the paperwork.
A motion from Board Member Ms. Harris to approve the superintendent's recommendation was seconded and the board approved the requests by voice vote with no opposition.
During the meeting the board chair announced the budget workshop scheduled for the coming Monday would be canceled because there had been "no further information regarding the budget," and that the board would revisit the workshop at its regular meeting on June 1. A brief procedural clarification followed when a member asked about a "blink" email; another participant explained the term likely meant a blind carbon copy (BCC) on email.
Before adjournment a board member extended good wishes to the athletes, noting they would be competing at her alma mater, Spring Valley High School. The board then moved and seconded adjournment and closed the meeting.
