Bamberg schools report testing dates, SRNS grants and summer meal sites; board approves student trips

School leaders delivered a series of reports to the Bamberg County Board of Trustees on May 4 outlining enrollments, discipline referrals, testing schedules, recent grant awards and calendar items ahead of the end of the school year.
Mr. Mer reviewed school‑level data: current enrollments and incident counts at each school, South Carolina Ready testing dates in early May, and end‑of‑year programming and graduation logistics. Several teachers across the district received Savannah River Nuclear Solutions Innovative Teaching Mini Grants for classroom projects; the superintendent said a $4,000 district check would be disbursed to award winners.
The superintendent also announced the district25 summer lunch program will run June 125 through June 25, 2026, 10:3011:30 a.m. at three initial pickup locations (Demarcer Elementary cafeteria, Richard Carroll Elementary and Bamberg Middle School); additional sponsor sites are being sought and staff named Miss Karen Williams as a contact for groups willing to host a site.
On athletics, the director reported team records, playoff start dates and free countywide physicals for students at Bamberg High School gym on May 7.
The board considered multiple overnight and out‑of‑state trip requests for JROTC/JRTC, FFA and boys' basketball. After a motion and a floor amendment clarifying that both JROTC programs would attend a Whitewater Center trip, the board approved the trips by voice vote. The motions included estimated per‑student costs and stated that student fundraising and family payments would cover most expenses.
Following executive session the board approved personnel recommendations for new hires and resignations and authorized the release of a list of students, as announced in open session. The board adjourned after members exchanged recognitions for student scholarship recipients and technical program graduates.
