Doris, speaking for the local SCORE chapter, told the board the group offers free mentoring, templates and workshops to help people start and grow businesses across four counties.
"SCORE is a mentoring organization for folks who want to start a business," Doris said, describing about 30 local mentors and workshops that range from writing a business plan to financial statements. She said the chapter’s outreach focuses on Beaufort and Jasper counties and that services for entrepreneurs are free locally.
Context: Doris said SCORE works with schools to introduce entrepreneurship, partners with the Don Ryan Center for product development referrals, and will participate in a Small Business Association resource fair on June 25. The chapter is recruiting mentors, especially for Hampton and Colleton counties, and provides referral lists when it cannot perform fee-based consulting work.
Board response and next steps: Board members and attendees asked about online-presence help and university partnerships; Doris said SCORE can refer entrepreneurs to resources and will follow up with local contacts. No formal action or funding requests were taken.
Notes: Quotes are drawn from the presentation to the Beaufort County board and reflect the scope of SCORE’s local chapter as described by the presenter.
