Bamberg County principals report end-of-year enrollment, awards and summer programs
Summary
Principals told the Bamberg County Board of Trustees on June 1 that enrollment and certain achievement indicators rose this year, schools won grants and athletic championships, and districtwide summer-school and free lunch programs begin June 1.
Bamberg County School principals gave the Board of Trustees a year-end update on June 1, reporting enrollment totals, recent grants and awards, and plans for summer programming.
Dr. Johnson, principal of Democ Elementary School, said the elementary finished May with 229 students and recorded eight referrals for the month. She told the board Democ was the recipient of a $1,500 wellness award from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and the Bowen Center, crediting school nurse Dabney Chisum for leading a yearlong wellness checklist that included a school garden, Wellness Wednesday announcements and an after-school wellness group. "We end the year with 229 students," Dr. Johnson said, and she described the prize as funds earmarked for ongoing wellness activities.
Denmark Middle School reported 127 students and six discipline incidents. The principal noted two students, Paige Mavine and Ammani Greatton, were selected to attend South Carolina's Governor School for Science and Math this summer. The district also has an asynchronous Apex program for summer coursework, with laptop distributions underway.
The high school update highlighted improved graduation rates and preliminary accountability data that remain embargoed until the state releases official report cards in October; the principal said detailed EOC results will not be available to the public until then. Principals across the district praised seniors, awards nights and graduation ceremonies held in late May.
Bamberg Airheart Middle School received a $3,334 Hood and Blowfish grant to support a mural project that will engage local artists and students. The athletics report noted nine region championships and two state titles this year, including a state championship for the girls track team.
Truancy and student supports were a theme across presentations. Miss Robinson Crosby reported district truancy falling to 8.3% and cited transportation, medical-insurance gaps, family dynamics and mental-health issues as drivers; she said the district social worker and community partners are working to connect families to services, including low-cost eyeglass resources.
Summer programming begins June 1. Principals confirmed summer recovery/summer-school schedules (dates vary by site but generally run through June 25), and the superintendent reminded the board the district will operate a summer lunch program June 1–25, 10:30–11:30 a.m., at multiple pickup sites. School leaders asked board members and community partners to help publicize meal sites and summer activities.
The board did not take action on the school reports themselves but directed members of the public with questions to contact the individual principals for further details.
