Cusseta‑Chattahoochee work session reviews public‑works problems, animal microchipping grant and zoning CUP refinements

At an April 28 work session the Commission of the Unified Government of Cusseta‑Chattahoochee County received operational updates and community program requests from county staff and outside presenters.

Belva Dorsey‑Mott of Enrichment Services and Sabrina Stephens, a local school‑board representative, outlined workforce training and certification programs (EMT, CDL and CNA training) and asked the county to consider a future letter of support for the program.

County Manager Thomas Weaver reported several water‑system issues: well #3 experienced an unexplained shutdown (possible lightning strike) and well #4 was offline while well #1 was handling system demand; crews repaired a leak on Trotters Ridge. Weaver also said the county received donated pet supplies and a $1,700 grant to support microchipping events for animals — a program that will cover both Fort Benning and county animals.

Community development staff presented proposed changes to the conditional‑use permit (CUP) process — including exemptions and clarifications tied to parcel size and housing type — that planning and zoning asked the commission to forward to the county attorney for review. Other items discussed included Friendship Road bid‑packet follow‑up, board openings on county authorities, potential capital purchases (quotes for a batwing tractor were requested) and a recommendation to consider a $2 monthly increase in trash collection fees to cover rising solid‑waste costs.

The session included an executive session for personnel matters; the board reconvened and certified the closed session. Several items discussed at the work session were placed on the May 6 regular meeting agenda for formal action.
