Ron Vonova, a Brooklawn resident, told the council on Oct. 2 that a neighboring property had long been strewn with bricks, pallets and debris and that the condition had caused mice problems and neighborhood distress.
Vonova said he had lodged prior complaints with the borough's code officer and showed photographs he described as both "before" and "after" cleanup efforts; he told the council he had offered to pay for the cleanup himself after installing an $11,000 fence but that debris remained. "I want you to see what I had to contend with," Vonova said while presenting the photos to council members.
Transcript records show a borough staff member or councilor acknowledged the code officer (referred to in the transcript as Mr. Astramm or Mike) is recovering from surgery. Council members said they would arrange for staff to inspect the property in the code officer's absence and follow up. One council member noted some ordinances are vague about extension periods and said the borough should consider clarifying the ordinance to document authority and extension timelines.
Next steps: Councilors agreed to re-inspect the property and directed staff to follow up; they also signaled a desire to review local ordinances governing enforcement timelines and extensions.
