Cusseta–Chattahoochee work session prioritizes Friendship Road repairs and conditional-use permit review

During a Jan. 27 work session, the Unified Government of Cusseta–Chattahoochee County set road and planning priorities for early 2025 and scheduled follow-up meetings. County Manager Thomas Weaver told the commission he wants to use 2024 LMIG funds to repair Friendship Road and to begin adding specific road projects (including adjacent Liberty Hill Road) to future work-session agendas.
The commission agreed to invite the Planning & Zoning Board to attend an evening meeting on Feb. 24 to review and propose changes to the conditional-use permit (CUP) process and to schedule public hearings as needed. Staff also placed cemetery bylaws on the next work-session agenda so the county attorney and cemetery committee can continue drafting ordinance language.
Department heads reported routine operational updates: parks and recreation is transitioning from basketball to baseball season and has staffing needs; code/permitting staff distributed the monthly newsletter and reported on permit activity; public-works staff reported repairs at Well #4, hydrant work and promotions; animal-control reported an uptick in stray dogs. The county will continue fiber-locate work and road maintenance planning.
A community member, Robert Sumner, described charitable programming he plans to run at the NSA compound and asked for county assistance to generate employment and community events. Commissioners did not take action on Sumner’s request at the session; the remark was recorded as public comment.
The work session entered executive session at 10:12 a.m. for legal, personnel and real-estate matters and reconvened at 10:55 a.m.; it adjourned at 10:58 a.m. Items formally scheduled for the Feb. 4 regular meeting include reappointments to the Planning & Zoning Board and a proposed Public Safety Director agenda item.
