Resident asks township to fund Burnside/Elise flooding study; engineer outlines longer state collaboration

At the Jan. 20 workshop a resident asked the Township to fund a study of recurring flooding near Burnside Avenue and Elise Street and to include the study in the 2026 municipal budget.
Kevin Harrison of 20 Burnside Avenue requested that Township funding be considered for a study to assess flooding in the Burnside/Elise Street area. Township Consulting Engineer Kevin Boyer replied that expected action would include studying the nearby stream and that remedying the problem is likely to be a lengthy process requiring collaboration with the State of New Jersey.
Mayor Kathleen Miller Prunty and Commissioner Terrence Curran acknowledged the issue, saying flooding in that area is regularly discussed at weekly Township Engineering meetings and had been raised with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at the end of 2025. No specific budget appropriation or timeline was adopted at the workshop; residents and staff asked that the township consider the initial step for the 2026 budget process.
The Committee did not take formal action at the workshop; staff indicated the first step will be a technical assessment and subsequent coordination with state and federal partners as needed.
