The Bamberg County School District board accepted the monthly financial report and scheduled a budget workshop for Friday, May 1 as trustees begin work on the district’s 2026–27 budget.
"We have to make sure that we're balancing the budget and that we're monitoring the budget throughout the year so that we don't get into financial difficulties," the chair told the room while discussing personnel costs and fund‑balance concerns. Miss Fur, the district finance presenter, said preliminary allocations from the state have arrived but not yet been finalized.
Trustees emphasized that personnel makes up the majority of the district budget and discussed the timing of two readings and a public hearing required for final adoption before July 1. The board agreed to hold an initial budget workshop on Friday, May 1 and to determine whether additional sessions will be needed to resolve allocations and staffing decisions.
During public comment, substitute teacher Jackson Price urged the board to address substitute compensation. "We get paid $75 a day if we don't have a teacher certificate... After the state takes the tax, I get $69," Price said, adding that certified substitutes receive about $125 per day. The board did not act immediately on compensation but the comment was entered into the record for budget planning.
The board also accepted the monthly financial report by voice vote after discussion of recent emergency construction work (roof repairs to stop water intrusion), vendor payments for special‑services legal work, and workers' compensation that is calculated in part by incident counts and total salaries.
Trustees were reminded that final state allocations could affect whether the district needs a continuing resolution; the superintendent said the district will monitor state action and bring continuing‑resolution options back to the board if necessary.
