Public commenter accuses council of divisive language; mayor apologizes on record

During the meeting's public‑comment period, a resident submitted a formal complaint asking that the council place on record concerns about language used at a March 30 budget retreat that the commenter said singled out African‑American residents and was "dismissive and divisive."

The complaint — presented for inclusion in the official record — requested acknowledgement, greater awareness of respectful communications and accountability going forward. The written statement asserted that the language represented a broader pattern of tone and posture observed since the newly seated administration took office.

Mr. G. Brown followed in public comment, telling the council that community members felt under‑represented in recent appointments and urging the council to vet candidates broadly. He said the community expects decisions "based on who's the best qualified," and urged the council to consider diversity when making appointments to boards and commissions.

Later in the meeting Mayor Chris Crowley acknowledged the concerns publicly. "I do want to take just a second and . . . apologize for my . . . words during the budget retreat," the mayor said, adding he did not intend to be divisive or disrespectful and asking for "your grace and forgiveness." He said his goal is unity and that he prays for the town.

Council members and staff took the complaint and comments for the record. Council did not announce a formal disciplinary or investigative process during the meeting, but the complaint was recorded and the mayor's on‑record apology was entered into the minutes.
