Recreation officials told the Central Town Council that the Grand Central Station Pro Series disc golf tournament drew 112 pro and amateur players from 10 states and generated an estimated $21,820 in direct local spending among survey respondents.
Mr. Deal said 112 players and about 52 spectators visited the course each day despite heavy rain during the tournament May 2–4. The event produced 87 completed surveys from participants; respondents reported an average $250 in spending on food and lodging during their stay, and players visited local attractions including the Central Railroad Museum and downtown businesses. "So the average spent on food and lodging during stay per person is $250 per person," Mr. Deal said.
Organizers reported 33 of 47 surveyed players were from South Carolina and that some visitors stayed multiple nights, using hotels, Airbnbs and campgrounds. Mr. Deal said the town could further capture visitor spending by coordinating with downtown businesses and providing promotional materials at future events.
What's next: Recreation staff will include the event report in the minutes and continue planning partnership opportunities for future tournaments and local promotions.
