The Marlboro County School Board approved Phase Two of a middle‑school athletics consolidation plan aimed at giving students fuller schedules and more competitive opportunities.
Corey Johnson, the district’s athletic director, told the board the plan would consolidate winter and spring middle‑school sports so teams can field competitive rosters and guarantee a full season. The plan adds sports such as cross country, volleyball, weightlifting, soccer, golf and track and field at the middle‑school level and seeks membership in the Big South Conference for those programs. Johnson said being in the conference would make scheduling easier and provide consistent seasons.
Board members asked detailed questions about travel, buses, practice locations and the effect on smaller communities. Johnson said middle‑school buses and a central pickup location would be used—similar to the district’s recent consolidated middle‑school football plan—and that overflow could be handled with C teams when necessary. He said eligibility rules (students failing classes would not play) would remain in force, and that the consolidation should reduce coaching costs because fewer, larger teams require fewer coaches overall.
A board member asked about likely expenses; Johnson said there would be a modest upfront cost (uniforms were estimated in the packet at roughly $3,855) but the district expects net savings by reducing duplicate coaching positions. After discussion, the board moved to approve Phase Two and the motion carried.
The consolidation plan is intended to increase competitive balance and to keep more students engaged in athletics from middle school through high school, the athletic director said. The board approved the plan and asked staff to coordinate schedules with the conference and manage transportation and facility use details.
