Spring Lake Heights council approves consent agenda, hears park and water updates; to defend affordable housing settlement objection

Kelly Community Center use by the Spring Lake Heights PTA (R2026‑82); participation in the State of New Jersey "COPS in Shops Summer Shore" grant initiative (R2026‑83, grant application AL-26-07-02-01); and bonding actions tied to 551 Sussex Ave LLC (R2026‑84, R2026‑85).
Finance: The council approved Resolution R2026‑86 (March 26, 2026 bills list) and Resolution R2026‑87 (April 2, 2026 bills list) on motions by Councilman John Casagrande, seconded by Councilman William Graetz. Both motions passed with all present voting aye and Councilman Dayton Lonsdale recorded as absent.
Public works and parks updates: Joseph May, Borough Engineer and Public Works Director, told the council that Dynamic Traffic will present revisions to the Old Mill Road Traffic Calming Project at the next meeting. He reported that work on Joseph E. Robertson Park's pickleball courts includes installing a new water line and a drinking fountain with a dog spicket, and that new benches have been purchased and will be installed when the project is complete—anticipated by Memorial Day. May also reported a shared‑service street sweeper arrangement with the Borough of Brielle and said the water tank project is awaiting parts availability.
Public comment: Karen Burke (606 Shore Road) asked about the kayak launch removal; Administrator John Barrett said the borough is coordinating with a neighboring municipality to purchase the dock prior to removal. Gaylan Nolan (1022 Allaire Road) inquired about additional benches at Joseph E. Robertson Park; May confirmed bench purchases and an expected completion timeline. Joan Brady (600 Essex Avenue) thanked Public Works for resolving a tree root and sidewalk issue near her property.
