Wallkill Valley board adopts goal to craft Board Norms, sets 3–4 month timeline

At its Nov. 18 meeting the Wallkill Valley Regional High School Board approved an addendum establishing a Board Goal: to develop, adopt and implement a Board Norms document aimed at promoting effective governance, collaboration and accountability.

Board member Cynthia Rock asked whether the timeline for that goal had started; following a brief discussion, the board approved an action plan that assigns responsibilities and milestones. The plan sets Month 1 for initial discussion, research and drafting (responsible parties: Board President, Superintendent and all board members, with an initial board retreat or workshop suggested). Months 2–3 are reserved for feedback and revision — the minutes specify review and discussion in a public meeting or work session with input from all board members. Months 3–4 are allocated for finalizing the document, voting to adopt the norms at a public meeting, and publishing the adopted norms on the district website and in meeting materials. The plan also calls for including the norms in new-board-member orientation and using self-assessments to measure governance improvements.

The motion to approve the addendum and Board Goal passed in a roll call vote (moved by Ralph Bonard; seconded by Robert Carlson). The minutes record the action plans and indicators of success the board expects, such as formal adoption and public availability of the Board Norms document and improved meeting practices.
