Planning Commission approves minutes, reviews subdivision approvals and county operations updates

The Wythe County Planning Commission approved the May 4, 2026 minutes June 2 after a motion by Commissioner Christopher C. King that was seconded by Commissioner Rodney S. Dunford and recorded as passing unanimously.
County Planner Lisa Shelton reported administrative approvals of several subdivision plats: minor subdivisions for Hurt Farms, LLC (Black Lick) and B. Dale Barker (Lead Mines); a lot-line revision for Charlotte Naber, Rebecca Hancock, Lesia Lewis and Lesia & Hal Lewis (Fort Chiswell); and a family subdivision for Jeffrey Osborne (Fort Chiswell). Shelton's review was recorded as administrative approvals rather than actions requiring full Commission vote.
Ex-officio Jesse Burnett said the Board finished a draft budget but the state had not released final allocations; the Board trimmed the draft to a $3.8 million shortfall and plans to draw from reserves rather than raise taxes unless state numbers change. "The Board trimmed the budget to $3.8M short and plan to pull that from reserves," Burnett reported.
County Engineer Johnny Kincer said he has reviewed Progress Park lots 10 and 35, described recent county flooding and reported staff were addressing drainage at the Foster Falls solar site. Kincer said the drainage issue with the back pond "may be because there are 700 sheep grazing the property and they are probably overgrazing it." Deputy County Administrator Matt Hankins also updated the Commission on cannery funding and an additional water tank, broadband progress with Citizens, the codification project, and the Liberty At The Lake festival. Hankins said the burn ban has been lifted but cautioned it may not last.
The Commission recessed to meet in a Land Use Classification work session on June 22, 2026, at 6:00 p.m., and adjourned the regular meeting at 7:52 p.m.
