Atlantic Beach council authorizes interim manager to hire a public defender and to negotiate hire of a town manager

The Town of Atlantic Beach council on May 5 unanimously authorized the interim town manager to hire a public defender and separately authorized the interim manager to negotiate and hire a town manager.
Both motions were moved by Councilwoman Jacqueline Gore. The motion to authorize hiring a public defender was seconded by Councilman Edward Campbell; the motion to authorize negotiating and hiring a town manager was seconded by Councilwoman Carla Taylor. Town Clerk Cheryl Pereira recorded roll-call votes of 'Yay' from Councilmen and Councilwomen present and Mayor Pro Tem John David.
Mayor Pro Tem John David also announced that a candidate for town manager, Adrian Jones, and his wife were attending the meeting and invited residents to greet them after adjournment.
What happens next: Staff now has authority to proceed with hiring a public defender and to continue negotiations to fill the town manager position. Any eventual hire for town manager will return for the council's consideration per the town's hiring process.
