Rockport committee previews embargoed MCAS results ahead of Sept. 24 state release

School staff told the Rockport School Committee on Sept. 18 that statewide MCAS results and related accountability data remain embargoed but will be released Sept. 24 at the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education meeting, with district- and student-level reports mailed to families later in the month.
The presentation explained two primary accountability metrics: a percentile rank that compares Rockport with similar K–12 districts and a progress‑toward‑target score that measures the district against its own goals. Staff emphasized that some subgroup data (for example, by ethnicity or special‑education status) will be suppressed when the subgroup size is below 20 students, a meaningful constraint in small towns like Rockport.
Staff also noted that the state’s targets use a wide baseline and that preliminary classifications can change between the embargoed release and final public reports. A committee member asked whether the state intentionally keeps 15% of schools in a “requiring assistance or intervention” band; staff said they did not have an answer and suggested the question be raised at the commissioner’s webinar the following day.
The preview included examples of district and school summary pages and a reminder that the public accountability report will allow drilldowns by student groups (high‑needs, low‑income, students with disabilities and by race/ethnicity) and indicators such as achievement, growth and chronic absenteeism. Staff said they will return to a later meeting with full, unembargoed MCAS results and recommended holding a separate session for accountability discussion and the detailed MCAS results so the committee and staff can review trends and context without compressing both items into one meeting.
