County Open Space Board adopts 2026 Open Space Guidelines, hears updates on park projects

Jake Mericle, the board's senior planning aide, led a presentation summarizing construction status and next steps for projects that included Harborview Park in Cape May; the David Douglass Sr. Memorial Park in Lower Township; beach crossover and amenities in Sea Isle City; the Clarence and Georgiana Davies Sports Complex in Middle Township; Sandcastle Park in Ocean City; Eco-Park in Woodbine; and historic preservation work at HCSV and the Tuckahoe Train Station in Upper Township. “The meeting was helpful for all participants and that it inspired updates to the Open Space Guidelines,” said Ronald Simone.
Board members emphasized the Davies Sports Complex includes a section of the county bike path and that the county would contribute funding for a portion of the bike-path repaving from non-Open Space funds, a decision Mr. Simone described as part of coordinating capital work with other projects. The presentation otherwise consisted of status reports and did not include a public comment period on the projects; no members of the public were present.
Why it matters: The adopted guidelines set policy priorities and criteria that staff will use to evaluate acquisitions, capital improvements and funding recommendations for the year ahead. Several projects discussed are capital improvements that can affect park access and trail connectivity in multiple municipalities, including Cape May and Middle Township.
