Principals, superintendent report schools ready; ELL assessment shows 'expanding' average proficiency

Administrators told the Board on Aug. 27 that Tenakill Middle School and Hillside Elementary are prepared for the start of the 2024–25 school year. Hillside Principal Dianne Smith thanked custodial, secretarial and technology staff for readying a new modular wing and described upcoming orientation events for families and staff. Tenakill Principal Christine Cipollini reported 593 students enrolled and previewed orientation and Back‑to‑School Night dates.
Superintendent Vincent McHale summarized district orientation activities for new staff and presented ACCESS for ELLs assessment results for the 2023–24 administration. McHale said 108 multilingual students were tested in listening, speaking, reading and writing and that the district average English proficiency is around level 4, the 'expanding' level. He said the district will publish detailed results on the district website.
The reports highlighted staffing and program readiness, new clinical intern partnerships with Ramapo College, and calendar events for families. Board members thanked maintenance and central office staff for summer work. The progress updates were informational and did not require board action.
