The Smithville Board of Aldermen on June 17 directed staff to increase event funding to $40,000 to enhance the city’s Fourth of July celebration and commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence alongside 2026 FIFA World Cup activities. The directive will be considered as part of the FY2026 budget review.
City Administrator Cynthia Wagner opened the budget discussion and framed staff’s proposals as tied to expected World Cup visitors and regional marketing. Parks Director Matt Denton presented event details and said that raising the fireworks allocation to $22,000 would extend the show to about 25 minutes from the current roughly 15 minutes; Denton noted Smithville would partner with Clay County on costs and Clay County Parks Director John Davidson was present to answer questions.
Assistant City Administrator Gina Pate proposed temporarily lifting limits on short‑term rentals from May 1 to July 31 to accommodate visitor housing during World Cup events. The Board did not act immediately on rental limits, instead instructing staff to seek recommendations from the Planning and Zoning Commission before any change.
Wagner, Pate and Denton outlined unbudgeted General Fund costs tied to expanded events — fireworks, advertising and downtown banners, temporary restrooms, inflatables and a proposed donation to the Go North KC marketing website — and discussed the potential economic benefits of regional coordination. Megan Sahlfeld of Clay County Tourism described a Northland World Cup Working Group and said Go North KC will promote Clay and Platte counties and local municipalities to attract visitors and businesses.
Board members debated the scope and timing of the expenditures and ultimately directed staff to increase the proposed allocation to $40,000; staff will return with final budget language and figures in the FY2026 budget review. No formal vote was taken on the event funding at the work session.
