Teaneck Board adopts spectator code of conduct for interscholastic events

The Teaneck Board of Education voted Feb. 25 to adopt Policy 9163, the district’s Spectator Code of Conduct for interscholastic events, following a second reading of the policy. The policy specifies prohibited actions by spectators — including profanity, threats, verbal harassment of officials or participants, entering the field of play and use of disruptive noisemakers — and authorizes removal from events and other disciplinary measures.
Board President Nadia Hosein said the policy aligns with the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association’s requirement that member schools adopt and enforce a spectator code of conduct. The policy requires parents of student-athletes to sign an acknowledgement of the rules during the high school sports registration process.
Motion to approve the second reading and adoption was made by Board Member Jonathan Rodriguez and seconded by Latisha Isley-Robinson; the vote recorded in the meeting packet shows the motion carried with all listed members recorded as voting yes. The policy text in the packet notes that if unsportsmanlike conduct involves a potential criminal act, the principal or designee shall immediately contact law enforcement and that failure to enforce the policy could result in penalties from the NJSIAA, including loss of hosting privileges for state tournaments.
The board packet lists detailed disciplinary steps and specifies that the policy applies to all spectators at home events and to other venues when the district has exclusive use. The policy was adopted with an effective date listed in the packet (adopted Feb. 11, 2026) and will be made available to NJSIAA staff on request.
Next steps: the district will provide the required acknowledgement form to parents during sports registration, and principals or designees will be responsible for posting the list of prohibited conduct at event venues.
