Closter schools: modular classrooms coming, roof and boiler work underway; TMS gym HVAC delayed to 2025

The Closter Board heard a facilities update July 23 as officials described multiple summer projects intended to be ready before the school year begins.
Superintendent Vincent McHale said modular classrooms — five rooms (four small‑group classrooms and one faculty room) — had been delivered for Hillside Elementary School and installation work was continuing in the school courtyard and glass hallway. "The construction manager is confident that the rooms will be ready for September," McHale said.
Other capital work includes roof replacements at both Hillside and Tenakill; the superintendent said the TMS roof project is expected to take about two weeks and the Hillside replacement about four weeks, weather permitting. Abatement work for boiler replacement at Hillside was completed prior to June 30; the new boilers were being fabricated with an expected arrival in the first week of August, McHale said, and burners would arrive later. He added that, if boilers are not ready by mid‑September, the district will continue using the current units until replacements arrive.
Window replacements for Tenakill have been ordered but a firm delivery date had not been confirmed; the vendor expected installation to begin in early October outside school hours. The TMS gym HVAC project is in the permitting stage and — because of long manufacturing lead times — is not expected to start until spring 2025.
Administrators also reported operational preparations: custodial staff completed deep‑cleaning and waxing routines, maintenance staff arranged modular access ramps and firewall connections, and technology and building staff scheduled laptop distribution dates and new‑student orientation sessions. Tenakill Principal Christine Cipollini provided dates for summer orientations and listed laptop distribution opportunities for new students.
District leaders framed these projects as preparations for the 2024–25 school year; contractors and vendors provided timing estimates that the board noted are subject to delivery schedules and weather.
