Mayor: Emergency cut-through at Swash must be completed by Sept. 4 after Tropical Storm Debby

Mayor Dave Buonviri said the town received emergency authorization to create a temporary cut-through at the Swash after impacts from Tropical Storm Debby and that the work must be finished by Sept. 4. He told council members he notified Brent Carey, Horry County Stormwater Manager, and said the town’s goal is to find a more permanent solution because the hazard continues to occur at least twice each year.

The Swash repair was discussed under old business. Buonviri characterized the action as an emergency response to storm damage and set the short deadline to complete the temporary cut-through before further weather risks. Council did not record any formal vote on a permanent remedy at the meeting; Buonviri indicated the temporary authorization was an immediate safety measure.

The issue matters to nearby residents and town infrastructure because recurring storm-related cut-throughs affect drainage and public safety. Council members did not set a specific timeline or budget for a permanent repair during the meeting; Buonviri said he had contacted Horry County staff to coordinate next steps. The town will likely need additional intergovernmental coordination or design work before a permanent fix is adopted.
