Mayor Buonviri outlines stormwater planning and emergency Swash response ahead of Tropical Storm Debby

Mayor Dave Buonviri told the Briarcliffe Acres Town Council on Aug. 5 that the town is moving forward with a SCIIP Stormwater Viability Planning grant and coordinating mapping and short- and long-term priorities with engineering consultant Bolton & Menk. He said several committee workshops will be scheduled and a public meeting is planned for November to present findings and collect input.
Buonviri said he had contacted Gerry Shea in Congressman Fry’s office, state representatives at the Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management (OCRM), and Dr. Hannides at Coastal Carolina University to pursue a coordinated emergency cut-through to relieve a stoppage in the Swash. He added that town crews had cleared storm drains and planned another clearing this week because Tropical Storm Debby was approaching.
The updates were delivered as part of a general workshop agenda that included infrastructure and administrative items. Buonviri framed the work as both a grant-funded planning effort and an emergency-response coordination matter: the SCIIP grant focuses on stormwater viability and mapping, while the Swash stoppage prompted interagency outreach to enable an expedited intervention if state-level approvals and logistics allow.
The council did not take formal votes on these items at the workshop. The town said additional public outreach materials and the schedule for the November public meeting will be provided to residents in the coming weeks.
