The Decatur Town Council moved on Sept. 10 to sell the town’s old city hall building to the local Veterans of Foreign Wars post for an offered purchase price of $50,000 and instructed the city attorney to prepare the purchase contract.
A council member opened the motion: “I make a motion to sell the old city hall building to the purchase offer of $50,000 to the BFW and have our attorney draw up the contract,” after which a fellow alderman seconded the motion. Council discussion noted that the town would pay for the transaction from certificates of deposit maturing in mid‑November and that the VFW commander had offered 10% ($5,000) as part of the arrangement.
Council members discussed timing for drawing funds from the CDs and confirmed municipal staff will begin drafting the contract this week. At least one council member said the town has had the sale on the table “for a long time” and it was time to complete the transaction.
A resident later thanked council members and staff for completing the sale and noted appreciation for long‑serving employees who used the building over the years. The council’s action on the motion proceeded without further amendment at the meeting; the attorney was asked to prepare the contract documents.
Next steps: the city attorney will prepare the purchase contract for the VFW and staff will confirm funding logistics tied to CD maturity dates before closing.
