Board approves location for Marquis de Lafayette historical marker; community events set for Nov. 2

The Goochland County Board of Supervisors approved the proposed location and maintenance plan for a Marquis de Lafayette historical marker and heard preliminary plans for a Nov. 2 commemoration.

Representatives of the Goochland Historical Society and the Virginia 250 commission described the marker location opposite the history center, noting the brick ledgers on site and the site’s historic associations. Manny Alvarez, chair of the local Virginia 250 commission, said the event will include a program at Tocahoe Plantation followed by an unveiling at the courthouse area that will be free and open to the public. He told the board the state’s multi‑year commemoration is expected to have significant tourism impact statewide; local organizers reported under $10,000 in current event sponsorships and multiple participating local businesses and civic partners.

Board members thanked the presenters and approved the request by voice vote; the commission will finalize plans and distribute invitations for the Nov. 2 event. The historical society said local school culinary students will prepare period‑inspired food for the celebration and local agritourism partners are providing sponsorship and programming support.

The board’s approval allows organizers to move forward with installation and public invitations; organizers said they will provide final event details and logistics once the marker is received and the event program is confirmed.
