Board of Education task force recommends unified PreK–12 board for three towns

Lon Seidman, chair of the Board of Education, presented the Governance Task Force's update to the Board of Finance and recommended transitioning to a unified PreK'012 board covering the three towns. Seidman said previous legal constraints on such a structure have been removed and that any alternative financial arrangement would require approval from the State of Connecticut as well as sign-off from each town's Board of Selectmen and Board of Finance.
Task force members described potential benefits including cost savings, greater operational efficiencies, and the elimination of the existing supervisory district structure. Consultants have been hired to conduct data collection and lead community engagement efforts, and town leadership will be part of the planning process.
Board members discussed next steps but did not take formal action on the recommendation at the meeting. The Town of Deep River and the two partner towns must each review the proposal and decide whether to move forward; further public engagement and formal approvals would be required before any governance change could be implemented.
