Residents urge board to preserve Transfer Station Sunday hours as $16,000 cut is considered

At its June 23 meeting the Deep River Board of Selectmen heard residents warn that a proposed $16,000 cut to the Transfer Station budget could lead to the elimination of Sunday operating hours, which several speakers described as among the busiest days.
Cathy Davis, a member of the Transfer Station Advisory Board, said the advisory group has worked on numerous cost‑saving measures, that it had not been aware the Transfer Station would be discussed at the meeting, and asked the board to table further action until the advisory board can participate. Davis also said Sundays are among the busiest days at the facility, making any reduction to Sunday hours particularly consequential for residents who rely on weekend access.
First Selectman Carol Jones responded that two people from the Transfer Station Committee attended the public meeting and did not speak against closing Sunday hours and that the public works director had been consulted before the meeting. Jones said the item will be discussed further with the Board of Finance on June 30, 2026.
Board members also discussed possible cost‑saving or programmatic initiatives, including participating in the Connecticut Stewardship Program for free tire recycling and a cylinder recycling program for cylinders under 20 pounds. No formal change to hours or budget was adopted at the June 23 meeting.
The board noted the Transfer Station’s holiday schedule: it will be closed Saturday, July 4 and open Friday, July 3. The matter of the $16,000 reduction is scheduled for further review with the Board of Finance on June 30.
