At the May 11 meeting the Campobello Council received monthly public safety reports from Police Chief Chad McNeill and Fire Chief Brandon McNeill summarizing April activity and recent grant awards.
Chief McNeill said the police department responded to 222 calls for service in April, investigated seven motor vehicle accidents (one with injuries), assisted EMS four times, conducted roughly 80 traffic stops that produced 24 citations and completed approximately 31 special assignments. He also noted strong community turnout and no incidents at Family Fun Day.
Fire Chief Brandon McNeill reported the department handled 29 calls in April, including seven motor vehicle accidents, two fire alarms, eight medical calls, two burn complaints, six grass or woods fires and three structure fires; the department responded within town limits and to mutual‑aid calls in the surrounding district.
Chief Brandon McNeill said the department was awarded a South Carolina V‑SAFE grant of about $14,700, intended for AED upgrades, additional pagers and pager batteries and communications improvements. He added the department plans to reapply for the federal SAFER grant when that program opens. Annual hose, ladder and pump testing identified several hose sections that failed testing and were repaired or replaced.
Council asked about enforcement activity, traffic accident locations and a potential uptick in bear sightings linked to new housing construction; staff said accidents were spread throughout town and urged awareness of wildlife when residents are outdoors.
Next steps: Fire and police staff will continue grant applications, maintain equipment, and report on implementation of V‑SAFE purchases.
