Town staff said an earlier commercial estimate from Signarama was roughly $21,000 for the sign alone and excluded site electrical work, hardscaping and landscaping. Staff proposed a revised concept scaled to a 4‑by‑8 foot format and described partnerships with the local welding program and businesses to provide labor, donated materials and services. Estimated metal material costs for the community‑built option were projected between about $850 and $1,000.
Council acknowledged potential cost savings, discussed visibility, long‑term maintenance and options such as programmable RGB lighting and solar power for illumination. The council approved the expenditure authorization on a motion by Council Member Joe McDowell, which Council Member Reitha Stevenson seconded; the motion carried unanimously.
Next steps: staff will procure materials up to the approved amount and coordinate with Swofford Career Center and local partners to fabricate and install the sign.
