Petitioner asks to delay Buckley variance after supportive member is absent

Mary Buckley asked the Board of Zoning Appeals to continue her petition after a board member who voted in favor previously was absent; the board voted to continue the matter to the next regularly scheduled meeting.
The Chair called the June 10 meeting of the Long Beach Board of Zoning Appeals to order and the board first handled a request to continue a previously heard petition. Petitioner Mary Buckley said a prior meeting included a vote in her favor by member Fred Woods and asked whether that prior support would carry to the current meeting.
The Chair responded that nothing carried over from the prior meeting and offered Buckley the option to proceed or to continue. Buckley said she preferred to wait so that the board could consider a full complement of members. The Chair moved to continue the petition to the next regularly scheduled meeting; the motion was seconded and carried on voice vote.
The board clarified that proxy votes are not permitted and that, procedurally, the prior public hearing had been completed; the current board session’s role would have been to vote on the petition if the petitioner had elected to proceed. With no further business on that petition the board closed the matter for the evening and moved on to the next hearing.
