Council approves sale of North Pine Street lot after business group requests $10,000 reimbursement

The Batesburg-Leesville Town Council approved on second reading an ordinance to sell a parcel on North Pine Street (TMS 07021-01-00004) after a public commenter asked the town to reimburse the Batesburg Business Association (BBA) for $10,000 spent repaving the property's parking lot.
The BBA representative told the council the association had worked on the Pine Street Plaza project for about four years and "we had spent over the last um four years approximately $15,000 on this site" and asked respectfully that the council reimburse the $10,000 spent on paving. The representative said the association abandoned longer-term development plans when a lead organizer developed health issues.
Council members noted that the hearing concerned only the sale of the property and that decisions about distributing sale proceeds or directing funding would require a separate motion or agenda item. Administration advised any request to direct proceeds to the association would either need to be included in an amended motion at the time of sale or scheduled for a future meeting; council chose to defer the reimbursement discussion to a later date.
The ordinance to sell the North Pine Street lot passed on roll call. Council did not take any formal action at the meeting to transfer sale proceeds to the BBA; the representative was told the council could consider the request at a future meeting if placed on the agenda.
