Quinton Board approves personnel appointments, curriculum additions and student programs

The Quinton Township Board of Education on Sept. 22 approved multiple personnel appointments, curriculum changes and student programs for the 2016–17 year. On the superintendent’s recommendation the board added substitute staff (including Timothy Johnson and Linwood Sharp), appointed Joseph Micarelli to replace Michael Salerno as Academic League advisor, and approved after-school tutors and mentor assignments.
Why it matters: these personnel and extracurricular appointments maintain day-to-day operations and extend academic supports. The approved REAP grant noted in the meeting also supports instructional staffing.
The board approved continuation of several yearly health-education programs: Footprints for Life (2nd grade), Too Good for Drugs (3rd), Keepin' It R.E.A.L. (4th), Life Skills Training (5th–8th), the Traumatic Injury Prevention Program provided by Cooper Hospital (paid by MAPSA), FamCare for one 8th-grade visit, Cornerstone Women's Resource Center training for grades 6–8, American Heart Association Jump Rope for Heart, and mobile dentist visits through the Smiles Program (parent permission required).
The board also approved three grant-funded Culture Club field trips for 7th and 8th graders — Washington, D.C.; Salem Ghost Tour; and the Salem County Underground Railroad Tour — to occur outside regular school hours (dates to be determined). After executive session, the board approved adding 'Horses' by Seymour Simon to the fourth-grade Reading/ELA program following review by the Reading/ELA Curriculum Committee.
