Town Board sets April 2 hearing for proposed local law on solar installations

The Town Board of the Town of Mamaroneck voted March 5, 2025 to set a public hearing on a proposed local law to regulate solar-energy installations at its April 2, 2025 meeting.

A presenter described the draft local law as focused on systems that convert solar energy into electricity, noting most installations would be rooftop-mounted. He explained the zoning-amendment procedure: the Planning Board has 45 days to render an advisory report on the proposed amendment and the Town Board cannot act on the ordinance until that period and the public hearing process are completed. "The process for doing such a law is to amend the zoning ordinance… the planning board has 45 days within which to render a report," the presenter said.

Board members voted to place the item on the April 2 agenda to satisfy procedural timing; the motion passed on a voice/roll vote with ayes recorded. The Planning Department was directed to coordinate the Planning Board review so the advisory report will be available ahead of the hearing.

What to expect at the hearing: The public hearing will allow residents and stakeholders to comment on use and placement of solar installations under local zoning. After the hearing and the Planning Board advisory report, the Town Board may consider amendments and vote on the ordinance at a subsequent meeting.

The hearing is scheduled for April 2, 2025.
