Resident urges permanent crossing guard at Chatsworth Avenue crosswalk; board to consider during budget

Veronica Troy, a Larchmont resident with children at Chatsworth Avenue School, asked the Village Board on Feb. 4 to fund a full‑time, permanent crossing guard at the Chatsworth/Forest Avenue crosswalk. Troy described the intersection as chaotic, with parked cars obstructing sight lines, diagonal parking creating a "blind crossing," motorists pulling into traffic and cars blocking the crosswalk, forcing children to walk around vehicles.

Troy said she and other residents raised the issue at a traffic commission meeting and that school administrators and village police support assigning a full‑time crossing guard at the location. She told the board that the crossing is the only school crossing in that area without a protected light or crossing guard and asked how the village can fund the position.

Mayor (presiding) responded that the village has just started its budgeting process and that the cost of a full‑time crossing guard can be factored into upcoming budget discussions. Trustees asked clarifying questions about the existing marked crosswalk and peak times for guard coverage; Troy suggested morning and afternoon coverage aligned with existing crossing‑guard schedules. The board did not take a formal vote; the item was left for budget consideration.

Why it matters: The request raises matters of school‑zone safety, traffic enforcement and municipal budgeting; residents said school staff and police support the measure but village funding will be required to make the assignment permanent.
