McBee council hears updates: $125,000 playground grant, multipurpose building ordered, water-meter financing next steps

McBee — Town officials on May 6 gave a string of project updates, including a federal grant to fund a children's playground, continued cleanup efforts targeting illegally dumped tires and other local maintenance matters.
Mayor Glenn Odom said the town has secured a $125,000 federal grant for a children's playground and has also received donations from Duke Energy and Omni Water that will supplement the project. "This is just getting us off the ground," Odom said, and council members expressed hope the playground could be installed by fall.
Odom also reported the multipurpose building the town has planned has been ordered after the law firm supplied a final required document, and that the police department building appraisal was scheduled for May 7, 2025 as the town "moves forward on the building." The water meter project is "ready to send to Rural Development," Odom said, signaling the next step in seeking financing or program approval.
Councilman Ricky Peoples said the Recreation Department's canteen is currently covering program costs, including paying umpires and referees. In the course of the discussion, officials noted that umpires and referees are being paid more — "$100 a piece sometimes for the night," Peoples said — and Councilman Robbie Liles raised the possibility of modest admission charges next year (roughly one or two dollars) to help offset rising costs.
Council also discussed recurring dumping of tires around town. Mayor Odom thanked volunteers including Jane Pigg and Jackie Hucks for providing containers and supplies for cleanup and thanked Councilman Charlie Sutton for removing tires from his properties. Councilman Charlie Sutton additionally asked the public-works crew to trim limbs obscuring stop signs and questioned the current location of town dumpsters; Mayor Odom said he would contact the county to confirm their placement.
The council adjourned after the updates and routine business.
